Time for celebration

The first half of July has a plenty of opportunities for being outdoors in Canada.
1st of July is Canada Day, the "Canada's birthday" as the popular press name it. Everywhere were people going around, enjoying parks, the breeze, music, fireworks, amusement. Most of them, as well as me, strictly wearing something red, the colour of Canada.

The third week of July, instead, is the time for the Calgary Stampede, a ten day event that could really be "The Great Outdoor Show on Earth". This years is its 100th anniversary and I was lucky enough to be there for celebrating it.
Needless to say it was a triumph of food, alchool, hats, boots, food, rodeos, cowboys and cowgirls, food, amusements, First Nations People, animals, blacksmiths, food. And food, of course.

Even if I didn't manage to attend a night of rodeo or chuckwagon race, I had my fun on Sunday afternoon.
Unfortunately I've a complaint. Among the stands of the Stampede there're some dedicated to livestock. That's good because nowadays children, specially the ones who live in towns, don't even know how a cow looks like.
The very sad part is that all the animals were in small cages like that.

I'm not a vegetarian and it's very unlikely I'll stop eating steaks in the next years, but it's my humble opinion that the intensive farming is NOT the right way of farming. It's a matter of fact that in North America live the fattest people in the whole world and there's a huge waste of food in Canada and USA. Clearly, this kind of farming supllies more food than necessary for the market. I firmly do believe that livestock deserves an ethic treatment, just like any other living being as we humans are, and that means a coming back of traditional way of farming. Surely it could be more expensive but in the long run is the only affordable way of farming.
I hope that, in some way, these lines will reach people at Calgary Stampede organizing committee.
